They delivered the truck to our home over 200 miles away from the dealership with no additional charge. In 1998, base model Neons disappear and are replaced with the Highline. The Dodge Neon always gets rated highly for the way it handles the road and its great acceleration, even with the base single-cam, 2.0-liter, 132-hp and 3-speed automatic. While it can struggle up hills, it adapts smoothly to curves. Most drivers agree it is more fun to drive than similar subcompacts. Plenty of room inside for four passengers, an easy to read and reach dash, and lots of trunk space make the Neon comfortable to ride in as well. The rounded front and high rear deck give it a sporty look, though the rear deck does cause blind spots. What most owners don't like is the poor reliability of the Neon, the cheap-looking interior, loud road noise, and lack of convenience options. They keep quality well maintained vehicle inventory. Very satisfied. Great overall experience. I just didn't like the fact of them not leaving me any finance information about do I have to pay a down payment on site when or if I come in person to look at then decide if I want to purchase the vehicle. Or if I don't have to have a payment at all until later. I was pre approved for the financing options. The staff was great to deal with. They were very friendly and not pushy. I would recommend the trip to Butler to see their facility. I LOVE the Hylander, it runs great, super clean, my Toyota salesman grandson said it was a great deal Car was very clean staff was great and friendly. I would tell my friends and family. Over all a great experience. The Entire buy process Was the fastest I’ve ever experienced as well. The highlight was the salesperson I worked with who was as personable and welcoming as possible. I’d strongly recommend Lithia to anyone. When i took car out for test drive he was texting me within 8 minutes. The entire reason i did not but this car was the salesman he was pushy kinda rude. Every junkyard in the country is practically paved in base Neons (if you don’t count minivans, the Neon is about the most numerous Chrysler product in American junkyards these days), but the numbers are starting to decline slightly as these 10-to-15-year-old cars wear out. What’s that, 50 more horsepower. The 1990s were strange years when it came to upholstery on Chrysler products.http://bvsbs.org/royal/userfiles/bosch-maxx-wfl-2064-manual.xml

This isn’t quite as weird as some of the fabric that went into the Sundance-based Plymouth Duster earlier in the decade, but it’s entertainingly dated. Judging from the number of Spec Neon veterans I see dominating 24 Hours of LeMons races, however, it appears that plenty of road-race freaks bought these things. Broken transmission?. I have a 92 Mercury with that (or very similar) green paint and it has spent its entire life outside. Despite minimal waxing, there is no peel, very minor fade and an overall good appearance. I’d imagine if garage kept, it would have looked pretty much new. For some reason the 2nd gen has power windows up front but crank in the rear. For some reason the 2nd gen has power windows up front but crank in the rear.” I don’t believe Neons ever had rear power windows. I wanted a Contour with the V6 and the manual, but ended up with the ZX2 instead. That engine was a screamer redlining at 8100 and topped out at 155 mph on the autobahn to Berlin. Very very good ride for the money. I was expecting a EXP replacement when I test drove one, but was disappointed to find it barely outran an Aspire. Talk about a knife in a gunfight. I lived with the moral victory that my car was a better street car and didn’t blow head gaskets every 20,000 miles. I raced NASA in 2008 with a ’94 ACR with 12,600 race-only miles on it.Back then (in 1994,) when I was looking for a small FWD car that I could both autocross and live with daily for less than 15K, I could look at the Neon, Sentra SE-R, Civic Si, Ford Escort GT, and a few others. I ended up in the SE-R. It came down to Mazda3 or Civic before I even drove anything, and after the drives the Civic didn’t even qualify. Even the Clubman wouldn’t work. A tiny owner, unusually good quality, or the car failed at low mileage. We’d probably see the odometer in a picture if it wasn’t electronic. Beats looking at tacky dragon print faux-leather seat covers.

Those seats are in pretty amazing condition; they would make a great conversation piece as part of a driving simulator cockpit. When she traded it in, the dealer noticed the immaculate seats — like never used before. The rest of the car didn’t fare that well; it was stolen by hooligans several times and found with raw meat and rats in the engine compartment. My daughter has a 99 plymouth neon 2 door with about 187k on it and the seats are in good shape. All 1st gen neons had mechanical odometers. So they should be around for quite some time. How much do you actually know about cars, can you do much more than change your own oil? I remember that CR story that dinged Neon for a broken door hinge. It was a freak accident. Other than the hinge, Neon had competitive crash ratings for the time. And remember that when I bought my Neon, I cross-shopped it with Aspire. Talk about death traps! Not a broken bone to report:-) It doesn’t necessarily mean that the car was repainted tho. It could have been in an accident and been repaired. Never been repainted, I just wax it about once every 4-6 months and wash it about once a month. By the way that is called the “core support.” Apparently they fixed the problem about 5 years into the model’s life. It was redesigned in 99 so all 99-up models have it. Replacements are all the later design. Nobody wanted to touch a car that had been owned by whoever put that on. I own a 98 Corolla, 335k miles, original engine and transmission, there is your diff between a Toyota and a crappy Chrysler product, can’t make out the odometer too well, but it looks like it’s reading 71k miles?? A Tahoe could do that and get better than 12MPG in the process. He rebuilt the suspension, engine and tranny in 2010, because he wanted to sell it (got a newer car and wasn’t needed).Might explain the car’s current residence. Not that I don’t love my Saabaru that I replaced it with. Some say once you got past the head gasket problem, they were reliable.

I think the first generation Neon had two critical failings. First, in a world where the competitive compact cars had 4-speed automatics, the Neon had a 3-speed. The 3-speed wasted the power of the engine and sentenced the car to way below average fuel economy. (The manual was much more competitive, but many people simply will not buy a manual transmission car.) Unfortunately, it didn’t fit people with hands. I have no idea why it was there, but that one “feature” eliminated the car from my consideration. You probably should be. A month ago, I would have never thought. There are a handful of cities with their. EA is still building their network so they may have more. And if you look at the RCP graph, the odds. We were not able to find a vehicle at this time but will be back to deal with Ron and Corwin Wholesale. Bought it used, so initially I had to work on the heater core. Actually the dealer repaired it. Afterwards, I kept that car 14yrs. Took me wherever I wanted to go. By then it became my 2nd car. I allowed my son to use it for some years. So the upkeep went down. Then I used it weekends only. Eventually sold it to a friend. He's loving it still as a 2nd car. You just have to upkeep your vehicles. Always! Rode smoothly, spacious interior. Nice trunk space. Engine reliable. I just adored it. Many Mike's in it and still rolling to this day. I see him from time to time here and there. U always ask if I could buy it back. Lol He's not budging. It's a 155,000 miles and could use a paint job. It's a great car and my family gets around in it just fine after 18 years. It's great on mileage and good for road trips. There are a few things that have been replaced such as the clutch, a head gasket, and now a radiator which are all inexpensive if you replace them yourself. Our salesman, Mike Lafitte, treated her (and me) wonderfully. Took his time, showed her cars, and made this experience so special for her. She was thrilled to drive away in her brand new 2017 Spark.

This is the 2nd vehicle we have purchased here, they treat you like family, and we highly recommend them to anyone looking to make a purchase. Other taxes may apply. See our step-by-step guide to replacing the clutch and the five-speed manual transaxle used in the Caliber, Compass, and Patriot. The standard Neons came with a 3.55 ratio throughout the life of the car. The 3.94 ratio was used on performance models — with all DOHC engines, and then with 2001-04 Magnum engines. 1995-99 ACR models used the 3.94 ratio. As a result of the differing fifth gear ratios and axle ratios, the top gear ratio varied. Michael Volkmann wrote, “The second generation has added reinforcement ribs to the case to increase the ridigity of the unit and allow for larger loading; and the bell housing was changed increase case rigidity and allow for the hydraulic clutch actuation.” Oil capacity is 2.1 qt (2.0 L) of a special fluid — not plain oil. Each of the separate crossover (rail selection) and select levers has pure rotary motion which minimizes shift effort. The driver cannot accidentally go into reverse from fifth due to a cam in the mechanism which moves the crossover lever into the three-four gate without binding or jamming. The paper-friction synchronizers are on the input shaft, lowering shift effort by cutting rotating inertia. A reverse brake mechanism minimized reverse engagement clash. There are needle roller bearing on all speed gears to reduce friction and extend gear life. The case has good bending stiffness, providing a natural frequency above the exciting frequency of the engine at peak RPM. The clutch cover is riveted to the flywheel, and the disc is captive inside the assembly. The hydraulically activated modular clutch is connected to the crankshaft through the same flexible drive plate used to attach the automatic transaxle torque converter. This eliminates the need for different crankshafts.

The modular clutch is replaced as a unit; it is activated by a self-adjusting cable. The release lever is contained entirely within the bell housing, cutting the need for a flexible boot. Fifth gear was an overdrive gear to improve fuel economy. The fill plug was on the differential area of the rear case housing, and the drain plug was on the bottom of the bellhousing case half. On the transaxle’s end cover was a metal identification tag. The rear of the transaxle was within the gear case housing; the back-up lamp switch and vent were both near the top of the housing. The selector shaft moved up and down (first to second, third to fourth, fifth to reverse), and the crossover shaft moved side to side between shift planes.A pin engaged the cam as the shifter came out of fifth, and the cam pushed the pin and shift assembly away from reverse. Also grease was not required on the retainer where the release bearing rode. The reverse idler gear was kept from clashing with the input and output shaft gears, and the input shaft was stopped before the idler gear engaged with another gear if a shift to reverse was attempted before the clutch spun down completely. The assembly consisted of a stop ring, friction cone, shim, needle bearing, and bearing race. It was not used on all NV-T350 applications. Third to fourth and fifth to reverse were on the input shaft assembly, and first to second was on the output shaft assembly. The assemblies had a hub, sleeve, struts, springs, and detent balls. It was an open-center design ring gear; it had a selectable shim on the outer race in the bellhousing case half which gave differential bearing preload adjustment. Adjustment for the side gear was made by changing the side gear thrust washers, which came in select thicknesses and various sizes. The input and output shaft bearings did not require any preload adjustment. They just need to have someone shift with the engine off while the other person watches the cables at the transaxle.

” The dealer usually replaces the entire cable assembly because the bushings are not sold separately by Chrysler.” The aftermarket, though, does sell separate bushings. When I purchased it from a dealership with a sketchy reputation, I have to admit I was concerned that it might be a lemon. It looked rough and the on the ride home I noticed several rattles and noises. I also could tell that this vehicle had been through a flood. I had purchased it because it was the only car that I could find within my very meager budget. When I got it home to my partner and her brother who are mechanics, they looked at me like I was crazy. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles. It is very basic, with a tape deck, manual locks and windows, and the air conditioner isn't as cold as a new car's. It has had two minor fender benders since we've owned it, and it survived those incidents without much of a problem.A friend of mine suggested that I try a dealership in a scary part of Philadelphia. I finally ran out of time and had to find something so I went to this car lot. There weren't very many vehicles to choose from and very little customer service. I basically chose the Neon because it was the best looking car in my price range. I had to drive it about seventy miles to get home and the whole time I was scared to death it would break down. It smelled bad and looked worse. There were rattling noises and the air conditioner didn't work. I was so worried about what my partner would say when I can rolling into the driveway with think clunker. She had wanted me to take out a car loan and I didn't want the added expense. I remember standing in the garage while she and her brother began looking it over part by part. I was so relieved when they looked at me and said shockingly it seemed like a good car. I was even more relieved when the list of repairs was small and cheap. We always shake our heads at the car and say how surprised we are that this car is still running. None of us thought it would last a week when I pulled in with it!I get about 34 miles to the gallon on highways. On city streets I get about 28 miles to the gallon. I also like the way it feels to drive the car.

Its not too large and it is easy to maneuver in case of parallel parking. I've driven it home to visit my mother in upstate New York and it handles very well in the ice and snow. I always feel in control. The trunk is very large compared to the overall size of the car. The back seat folds down so that I can haul longer items if necessary. The interior is a charcoal gray color which is nice. (more) I get about 34 miles to the gallon on highways. I have taken this car on several long-distance trips and commuted daily over 140 miles for three years. I never experienced any break downs or major repairs. I was so confident in this vehicle that I advised my niece to purchase this same model when she was ready to purchase her first car. I imagine this car will continue to be in our hands and still running for years to come. It doesn't run down!None of them have tarnished my overall opinion of the car very much, but they were cons nonetheless. I'm disappointed in the paint on the car. Even after the charge, the air never gets as cool as I would like or as cool as my other vehicles do. I suppose that this probably has something to do with the age and wear of the vehicle, but I wish it weren't so warm when I drive it. The heater works pretty well, but it takes a long time for the car to get warm if it has been in the cold. The stereo speakers are also a bit touchy. Most of the time they work just fine, but once in awhile the rear speaker on the driver's side stops working and then will suddenly begin working again. This can make volume control a little tricky sometimes. And while they came loaded with features you'd expect on more expensive models during the 1990s, they had their fair share of wear items. The build quality is reasonably good, with little to no rust after 20 years. However, like many Chrysler products, the Neons had issues with their oil seals, as well as chipping paint, and unusually rapid brake pad wear. And they don't age gracefully, since they need sensors replaced more and more often as the years go by. Toward the late 1990's, it would likely be difficult to find a Neon that didn't leak engine oil, and that actually had a sunroof that ran smoothly in its mechanical tracks. Still, this car was the best bang for buck on a domestic-branded automob. The dealership sold it to me telling me that it had a swapped rebuilt engine, and that there was a lot of aftermarket work done in it. Little did I know that I had bought a Neon ACR, and one that had 27k on it. The motor was rebuilt, not swapped, with the original block on it. I didn't know I had such a gem.
