Always refer to your treadmill instruction manual for details on adjustments for your particular model. There are some basic adjustments needed on many treadmill models. Always turn off and unplug your treadmill before making adjustments or cleaning it..Clean Your Treadmill on a Regular Basis This is important to the life of your treadmill, and can cause a multitude of problems if not performed. Dust can require the treadmill motor to run harder and hotter, eventually burning it out. Take a few simple steps to prevent this from happening: Unplug your treadmill; use a damp rag (without soap) to wipe down your treadmill; vacuum under your treadmill often; and vacuum under the motor hood as well. Dust between the treadmill deck and belt. Do this entire process once a month and vacuum and dust once a week. Aligning the Treadmill Belt The treadmill belt will eventually go off center. You should adjust it or the motor and belt can be damaged. With the tool advised in your user manual (this may be hand tool that came with the treadmill) turn the screw on the back left rear of the treadmill deck to the left or right according to which way the treadmill belt needs to move. Do this until the belt is centered. Many manufacturers advise having the belt running while you do this. Adjusting the Treadmill Belt Tighten the belt if needed. Using the tool advised by your manufacturer, turn both screws at the back rear of the treadmill deck in an equally clockwise direction. This will provide more tension for your belt if it is loose. To loosen the belt, do the same but turn the screws equally in a counter-clockwise direction. Keep the Deck Lubricated Many treadmill decks come pre-lubricated and you don't need to do this task for the first year that you own the machine.
Afterward, you may need to start lubricating it according to the directions in your owner's manual. All you need is a rag, a lubricant recommended by your manufacturer (you can purchase these online) and a tool to loosen the treadmill belt. Unplug the power cord and remove the cover over the motor. Loosen the screws that you used to adjust the belt tension and push the back roller towards the deck. Now loosen the front roller and remove it by inclining the treadmill so it can be removed. If your treadmill has an incline function, plug in the treadmill, turn on the power and incline the treadmill this way. Next, remove the rear roller and then the treadmill the belt. Unscrew the screws that hold the deck in place--remove them and lift the deck and the belt out at the same time. Now you can lubricate the deck. Be sure you don't over lubricate the deck as this can do more harm than good to your equipment. Your manual should provide a maintenance schedule and recommended products for your treadmill. Trim Worn Edges on the Treadmill Belt Before replacing the treadmill deck and belt, you should trim the edges of the belt if it is worn. Lay the belt flat on the ground. Measure and mark the belt so you can trim it evenly on each side. Cutting only what is worn, take a flat piece of steel or other metal object as a guide and use a razor knife to cut along the edges. After you check to make sure the edges are smooth you can replace the belt. Adjust the Treadmill Drive Belt The motor drive belt turns the front roller on your treadmill. It may need adjusting from time to time. It is located underneath the motor cover and connected to the motor. Some newer models have an automatic tension device. You shouldn't adjust these since they are preset. As always, consult your instruction manual for directions. First, make sure the drive belt requires adjustment. This is usually the case if the drive belt or front roller stops when the belt is stalled. Unplug the treadmill.
Find the bolt that runs the full length of the motor mount and loosen it. Then find the set bolt(s) on the motor and loosen these (do not remove the bolts). You may also have a bolt that runs the same direction with the walking belt. If you do not have this bolt, the drive belt must be tensioned by hand. This requires two people; one person applies increased tension to the drive belt, the other person should tighten the motor set bolt(s). With the motor cover removed, plug the treadmill in again, walk on the belt and try to stall it to make it slip. If the problem is in the drive belt, it will stop or the front roller will stop when stalled. If the motor, drive belt and front roller turn when the walking belt is stalled, the walking belt is slipping on the front roller and needs a tension adjustment as described above.
